In 1973, Ed Hermance opened a gay/lesbian bookstore on South Street in Philadelphia. He named it after James Baldwin's novel, Giovanni's Room. It was one of the first LGBT focused bookstores in the country. Hermance was photographed at the bookstore's current location at 12th and Spruce Streets in Center City Philadelphia
